It is a shame because DSG is the best autobox by far. But, DSG can't fit with longitudely mounted engines in the A4s and A8s. VWs are mounted horizontally for more passenger room, and A3 has DSG because its based on VW's Golf platform.
Audi's AWD, and heavy (but rigid) body structure do not help in the handling department. As an Audi owner, my car is rock solid but heavy. Word has it that Audi has acknowledged BMW's superior handling and has hired exBMW engineers to close the gap. BMW has led the pack on dynamic and variable suspension calibration. Everyone is either copying or studying this to some degree. I'll look for related articles.

DSG isn't perfect but it has been acknowledged as a huge step forward using the unique double clutch design. No doubt to be copied to some degree by others including our favorite brand. Most auto rags have given it the high thumbs up. As for performance car, auto writers were amazed at how well it funcitoned in the Bugatti Supercar with 1001 hp. As you mentioned, each application is different and no doubt Porsche will get it right. Did Porsche abandon DSG or are they creating a new solution??

....i've heard it is OK too, but i've also read that it hasnt been very reliable in terms of long term use, and that the dual clutches tend to burn out quicker then one would anticipate....supposedly BMW is working on the tech as well for non-M cars, who knows what will happen, but it seems strange that M would abandon SMG at any time in the near future, there would probably be a rebellion as so many M5/M6 owners have been forced to go the SMG only route, so I would not think that the E60/E63 M cars would ever get a dual clutch....
speakin on the P-cars, the funny thing is, and the article eludes to this point, is that Porsche was the first company to develop dual clutch technology in the 80s for their race cars, but have not used it in production cars yet..they were hoping to put it in the 997 but were very unhappy with the performance....they are developing a better version of DSG than that which audi uses today as they have a real need for it in the 997 and of course the Cayman...the only thing i care is that they get it right within the next 4 years, when i'll be looking for my next car, and the top 2 cars on my list as of today are the R8 and the Panamera, followed by the next iteration (F12?)of the 6er of course

But doesn?t the Audi interior look OLD? Good quality, nice materials but OLDFASHIONED!
Audi has a problem sticking to their automatic gearbox, and at the same time going for the BMW... sorry high revving concept. You can?t have a autobox revving higher than 7000 rpms, can you?
Why no DSG in the Audi S cars????
[/quote]
why I do not care for Audi, they only copy others... BMW was first with Idrive they have copied, the PDC is also ...in a Skoda you have the same but in monochrom... no new under the Moon, 5.2 for S6 yes as M5 had the same....

and as for DSG. Its good and VERY VERY smooth if you want to go up or down 1 gear but when you decide to skip one say from 6 to 4 it'll take much longer than SMG.
As for reliability... I havnt heard anything about it... so you're saying that the dual clutch wont last long?
