Even if those who say total emissions would be the same or worse are right, here are the big advantages of plug-ins:

1) it gets us off oil, and on to other fuel sources (natural gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, and renewables), which we either have in abundance in the US, or are 100% clean. Oil is running out, and supply interruptions and shortages are likely in the coming decades. If this happens before we transition off of oil, it could crash our economy, or get us into a shooting war with a nuclear power like China over the remaining supplies.

2) it allows the polution problem to be managed centrally (at the power plants), rather than relying on the fickle tastes of consumers in solving the problem. Electricity can be produced with zero emissions (nuclear), and natural gas is far cleaner-burning than oil. I admit coal is a problem, but perhaps in the coming years solar and wind can be made more feasible.

3) it gets the choking smog from auto tailpipes out of our cities.

So far, this thing is still vaporware. Until it actually gets on the road and does something, I will consider it pie-in-the-sky.

Having said that, if this car really has the potential to get us off oil, it will be worth a big-time government subsidy. Imagine finally telling all the Middle East countries to go to he!! and drink your oil! We could save a trillion dollars and many lives if we can wash our hands of the whole rotten ME, and keep them from getting more and more of civilizations earnings.

But until it hits the streets, I have to reserve judgement.

Does anyone know how many MPG a F1 car gets?...... my brain does not work in KPG or KPL if there is such a thing.
Don't worry, I am going somewhere with this.

Yeah, but I'm sure Bush and his goonies will make sure you and I will continue to fill his pockets, oops I mean continue to use oil for our cars.

It would really be great if everyone could get into using biofuels/electricity for future cars! Hope it happens sometime soon.

If GM doesn't deliver like it promises, it would be another blow to our reputation. They are trying to rebuild it with the Buick lines.

While the claim is certainly a technological advancement, it simple is shifting the carbon emmission equation to the powerplants. When your electric bill gets high enough, then you'll start to calculate how much $/kw/mile. Then the focus is shift to the powerplants.

So easy and popular to blame Bush for everything. However, 20 plus years of mis-guided energy policy plus world wide increases (especially Asia) in demand has us in the higher price environment. I even saw people trying to blame Bush for the California wild fires!!! Incredible.

This is a car site and debating political topics is like debating abortion or religion -- everyone believes what they believe and no argument is going to sway one side to the other. That being said, I think most of us can agree that moving away from gas guzzling vehicles is a good thing. I'm seriously looking at the Audi A5 TDI. I've been wanting a diesel for a long time. The Prius to me looks like a Gay Star Trek Shuttlepod (not that there's anything wrong with that). "Captain, she can't handle it". All this development really needs to be fast tracked and supported by both government and consumers. We have to be concerned about the future of our planet.

BTW, since you brought up the wildfires I think I did see Dick & Bush running through Malibu with matches and gas. (J/K)

Well stated fj.
It would be pretty nice if Chevy can actually make it happen and not have it be a modified downgraded piece of crap. Someone I know has one of those toyota death traps; I wouldn't be caught next to it nevermind driving one. Actually I think biofuels ,hydrogen might be the future.
