Just briefly skipped over a review of the facelifted SLK and they are talking about a system that varies the gearing of the steering. I think MB calls id Direct Steering. May be a repost but I am glad the intdustry is catching up

I don't know if it was JUST introduced. I have it on my MB 07 E63. Steering still feels too light for me at high speeds.

To me "Steering type power Power-assist vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering" sounds a lot like Active Steering, no? I take this to mean that the steering gets heavier as speed increases and the steering becomes light when maneuvering in tight spaces.

It does sound like the "Direct Steering" that M-B is referring to is similar to AS and it does seems as if it's new (and possibly not on your AMG car VT...)

Yeah, I was having a hard time finding anything conclusive that the E63 has anything like Active Steering.

I'd like to drive a car with active steering / dynamic drive. They are expensive options in the UK and I don't know anybody here that's got them - would be interesting to see how much difference they really make, as I find my current car very nice to drive and very controllable.
In fact, I would say the reason I don't engage sport mode very often is because it drops(raises?) the steering ratio making it harder to turn sharp corners, to me that seems backwards for a sport mode?
