How's about a 550i vs. the new M3 sedan with a V8?
Are you serious?

Hey Znod, have you tried my new "acceleration assistant" method yet?
Hi iii:

No, I haven't yet tried it, but will do so if, and when, my car starts accelerating properly again.

znod - out of interest I just tried the performance calculator at:

http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp

Stock M3

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 343
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1570
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 221.98
0 - 60 (Secs) : 5.06
0 - 100 (Secs) : 11.65
60 - 100 (Secs) : 6.59
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.32
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 106.90
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.22
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 108.11

Stock 550i

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 367
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1735
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 214.92
0 - 60 (Secs) : 5.19
0 - 100 (Secs) : 11.75
60 - 100 (Secs) : 6.56
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.42
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 106.89
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.32
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 108.08

Calculation assumes manual gearbox for each

Also M5

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 507
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1830
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 281.50
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.26
0 - 100 (Secs) : 8.70
60 - 100 (Secs) : 4.45
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.35
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 119.12
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.25
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 120.44

M6

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 507
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1785
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 288.59
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.19
0 - 100 (Secs) : 8.57
60 - 100 (Secs) : 4.38
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.28
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 119.69
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.18
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 121.02

Corvette Z06

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 377
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1420
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 269.76
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.38
0 - 100 (Secs) : 9.84
60 - 100 (Secs) : 5.46
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.60
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 113.19
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.50
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 114.47

All theoretical, but interesting from a power to weight point of view.

In theory at least at the 1/4 mile:

1st M6
2nd M5
3rd z06
4th M3
5th 550i (but only JUST)

Very interesting. Thanks for letting me know about the calculator. Looks like an 02-04 Z06. Theory doesn't work too well on this car--since, for example, the US mags did much better in general. Does 1/4 mile, versus drag-strip 1/4 mile mean street versus actual strip? Have you looked at the "Our Fearless Forecasts Thread" in the M5 discussion? You might find it interesting.

I'll have a look at your other thread.

Don't understand the diff between the 2 1/4 miles - maybe drag strip is less due to a better surface or some other conditions - just guessing.

The calculater is interesting, but ignores gearing, power curve and draf co-efficients. In fact I'm surprised at how accurate it is without these factors.

Right, it's not bad given those omissions.

Hi all,
I had a E46 M3 before and i regret to say that there is no E60 besides the M5 that can take out an M3. Your calculations are ok but they wont take into account the gear ratios which in an M3 are much more adjusted to high acceleration capabilities matching a sportscar like the M3.
A 550i is a compromise of sports and comfort so the ratios are adjusted to that, not to make too much rpm cause that would affect the comfort and noise in the car.
So i hate to bring it but there is no chance a 545/550 could beat an M3 with equal drivers.

I completely agree - when I posted the calcs I pointed out that they were simplistic and based on just power and weight......but the 550 is starting to get close......
