The time has come to say goodbye to my beloved E60. Having retired recently, my final company car will have to go back to the leasing company soon so I?ve been left with the task of purchasing my first car for more than 30 years!

The BMW has been a very hard car to replace, there?s not a lot to match it for dynamics, technology, reliability, luxury, performance and crucially looks.
I even considered buying it from the company, however I feel like a change, and maybe something newer, with less miles.

With my budget, I considered an 07 E-Class ? I like the class of a Mercedes-Benz, but after trying out a E320 CDI, with all the toys, as nice as it was, it wasn?t anything special. Very clinical, and bland.

I also looked at the current deals from Saab ? having owned two 9-5?s previously, I?ve always been tempted to go back. I was especially impressed with my previous Aero, so it was enticing to see them selling off 9-5 Turbo Editions (260BHP HOT engine) within my budget, brand new.
I?m not keen on the new looks though, and driving it didn?t bring back the happy memories of the previous model. It seemed so cramped and dated compared to my 525d. Still fast though.

In the end I decided to bite the bullet and go for the car I always wanted, even moving up a class:

Say hello to my new Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVI Sovereign.

I will admit some of the interior and technology is dated compared to the E60, especially the sat nav and PDC, but it does feel very special. And very luxurious.

It also drives beautifully, with a smooth ride, hushed and relaxing ambiance, yet still has a touch of sporting aggression, in red, with 20? wheels. Although during the test drive I didn?t get chance to fully explore the twin turbo diesel engine, I would imagine it is every bit as responsive as my E60, and with seamless automatic transmission a piece of cake to drive. It shrinks around you when pushed, and has all the features I?ve been looking for, bar maybe the pretty graphics of iDrive, visual parking sensors, and flip up boot (trunk) lid ? which incidentally is smaller than the BMW.

You can?t have everything ? but nearly in this case. I look forward to its delivery!

I will relish the last few weeks of my E60, but will remain a fan of the car and of this forum, from which I have gained some very valuable advice and found a lot of interesting information. If only there was as good and comprehensive forum available for Jaguar XJ?s!

The Jag is truly one of the more beautiful cars you will ever have to push to the dealer! Seriously though, I hope yours is better than those I've heard about recently!

With those choices, I'd opt to go with the first pic -- no, not the MB -- the BMW of course

Good luck with your selection

i like the jag and wish you good luck with it. My aunt drove jags for a long time, she had five or six, held each one for about four years. The last one, at 40k miles "detonated", is the term the mechanic used. The engine filled itself with fuel and when she turned the key.....boom.... while she had them I loved driving it and riding in it, you could eaisly go 100 mph and not realize it. gl

Pretty car ... I'm sure it drives well... good luck

My wife has always wanted a Jag but the Tata deal killed that dream...

Don't worry about the comments about reliability - Jag's predicted reliability is no worse than BMW's (and in last year's Consumer Reports it was significantly better). The XJ is a great car - enjoy!

Congrats on retirement, but please PLEASE do not go with the Saab. Let me preface this by saying that I have never been a big fan of Saab, but there new cars (esp the front end) look terrible IMO. Why would they highlight the headlights with wrap-around "chrome"?
Jaguars are simply stunning on the road. They are beautifully designed. I am sure the driving experience will not match that of the e60, but a nice option.

The new Saabs are not pretty, but worst of all - they're not new. Not underneath.

I think the Jag is a good move in your circumstances. You have to sit in one and drive it to understand why they are special.

I drove this 2004 pre-owned red XJR two days ago - its at a local dealer. I only had it for 15 minutes, but plan to go back and borrow it for an overnight test. It was very sleek and seemingly fast with its supercharged engine. It felt a bit heavy, but had crazy torque.

I like the look of the XJ cars, especially in red.

I hop you enjoy your new ride. Its a very nice looking car..
