I had 2 BMWs in the last 6 years, and I hold this brand in the highest regard. Anyone I came across knows that I am nuts about BMW, most of my friends got BMWs cause of my influence.
Lately when I approach the dealer about the new 535i, I don't feel the same respectable treatment as before, more like a take it or leave it attitude. It is either they are too head over about their products or the 535i is in too high of a demend, who knows? Although I heard BMW is intentionally milking the new 535i to the fullest as this is the first year of its release.

This took me to look elsewhere and I was amazed by the new S4, the interior is so nice. The torque is incredible this car pulls like no tomorrow, its a very different driving feel to the 5 I know so well, I think its more powerful than the new 535i LCI.
The question came down to if I should get the same car again, or try a change for the next 3 years. If I get the S4, will I be always looking at another driver's E60 LCI and feel the 'missing it' or I had one before too?

S4 pros:
The interior and controls, layout and the fantastic steering wheel.
The speedo/tach hands down high tech look.
The endless and endless torque.
The gorgeous colours in pearl metallic finish.
Seat (Recaro) comfort and design.
Fit and finish.
Value for money.

S4 cons:
Styling (still trying to grow on me) boring, don't like the under-dog/stealth logic.
Audi brand image.
Gas consumption.
Tire life.
Smaller size.
Reliability?

I know BMW so well and don't know much about Audi, a bit uneasy shall we say. Audi's image is like if I cannot afford a BMW... I can have a glorified VW, but what about comparing to Porsche its wealthier cousin?

If thats what you think about when your looking for cars, then get a benz or bmw. Dont worry about what others think of you, it shouldn't be high on your list. You should pick the car you want based on; what the vehicle is going to be used for and whether it suits your driving style. Not because you think Audi image is I cannot afford a bmw.

If I remember correctly, Audi A6 owners have a higher income than 5-series owners.

That doesnt make sense 'cos I had an A6 years ago when my income was lower

When I bought my 535d Id narrowed the shortlist to the S4 and the 535d. The 535 won it pretty much on being the bigger more complete car. Performance, albeit in DMS form is pretty similar but the diesel economy was the final nail in the S4's coffin for me.

If it was a petrol 535, the decision would be even easier 'cos youve got that sweet 6 cylinder soundtrack and easy tuning ability to boot.

Unless, you need the quattro 4wd its a no brainer really...or even if yo do choose the the 535xi!

FWIW Audi's image in many parts of the world is better than BMW's. I'd say this was true for the UK, for example, where BMW's image (and most specifically the owners) is some way behind Audi.

I owned an 01 and 02 S4 the older Twin Turbo version. I thought it was much better than the new V8, that car is sterile... period. The BMW is much more alive... just the thought of that twin turbo in a 5 series :E... this has me thinking I might trade in my 545i for it next year... the Vishnu chip on that car gives it 80 more horse putting it up not so far from the new M3...

So my vote 535i !!!

Good luck with your decision, they are both excellent vehicles.

Hi.
All I know is, S4 automatic is SLOW!
0-100km/h over 7sec.
So...a fecking-civic-typer will show its tail lights...
And a 2.0T manual will go by...but a S4 manual may be a bit faster...
