The heart of the Audi S4 beats for motorsport – strong and powerful. The newly developed six-cylinder engine impresses with 245 kW (333 bhp) and TFSI? technology: an innovative mechanical supercharging system with intercooler.
TFSI? makes the 3.0 l V6 a compact power plant with an early peak torque of 440 Nm – and with moderate fuel consumption. Its ample torque curve is most impressive: 90% of torque is available across an engine speed range from 2,200 to 5,900 rpm.

Are they not trying to compete with the c-class amg and bmw M3 and anymore?
I heard they even lowered the price tag by alot too.
Maybe they're seeking a different market.

RS4 is the competition to m3 and c63, when they introduce the new one it would most likely have at least 420hp (to beat m3).
s4 is a fast car though, but it's more likely to compete with 335i

I dont think so. Its just that horsepower is like a number game now.
Like the previous generation m3 c55, and s4 all had around the same horsepower.
It is because the rs4 has been around for a while, and top gear made a comparison with the e92 m3 and c63.
But seems like they're gonna use the s4 to compete with the c350 , 335xi and other equivalents.
And finally, like u said, using the rs4 instead to compete for the champion title of its classs.

The RS models have been their top tier trim level for years, similar to the M-division. Right above their S-line trim level.
For awhile now the B7 S4 has been competition to the 335i.
So nothing has really changed. This new B8 S4 is still competition with the 335i.
A RS5 is on the way to compete with the M3.
