A news source reported this. Anyone have information about the technology?

Don't forget that BMW's active cruise with stop and go sort of removes some of the driving from the equation...

Well I'm certain that the automatic lane change is optional in the S-Class as well but I must admit -- in rush hour traffic, I absolutely love using my active cruise!

Just a small question, can you order M cars with ACC?

I was meaning to look into your opinion of this after a few months. Do you turn it on and let your car roll on its own in stop and go traffic? That is a feature that I could really appreciate in our traffic. It would minimize the number of times that the guy behind honks at me because I am busy on my Blackberry. Does it work this well?

Not that I condone distracted driving but I have a nickname for ACC with stop and go..."Blackberry Mode"...

Kidding aside, you really still need to pay attention to what's going on. There are times when the system gets confused (it doesn't happen very often but all it takes is one mistake to ruin your day) but the more you use it, the more you start to learn under what conditions you may have to intervene, etc. I use it frequently and really love it -- even if I don't use my Blackberry very often while in traffic. I find myself looking around a bit more at things I might not normally look at, etc.

Once in a while, it slows you down or decelerates the car a bit more suddenly than a human would so there still is a potential to piss the guy off that's behind you, just for different reasons...

One more thing that I'd like to mention -- the next time someone asks whether the HUD is worth it, in addition to the standard "it's better if you have navigation" answer, we need to add that it's very helpful if you have ACC since you're able to easily see if you've "locked on" to the car ahead of you.

I think there are a lot of BMW drivers who do not agree with us and who are also eagerly waiting for BMW to releases the whole GPS coordinated auto driving car as we saw in the TOP GEAR, to be frankly car enthusiasts are really a small number for the greater car market, so we will be seeing a lot of other things becoming highly automated, and sometimes they are really cool, sometimes useless, and sometimes its just something great to brag about. Maybe when we are older we will need auto lane changing stuff more than Logic 7 or auto self park because our backs would hurt to turn around, its just amazing how different markets tend to need different variations in the same kind of product.

Thanks for the comments. It seems like an option that I should tick next time.
