Do you all have any opinions about the new 2005 Audi A6? I have read quite a few positive reviews and wondered how it fares compared to our esteemed E60.

I just drove both the Audi A6 and BMW 545 today. Here's what I think:

A6 4.2

The A6 has some nice features that BMW should have: intelligent key - just push engine start button w/ the key in your pocket, full size spare tire, huge trunk, rear seats fold flat standard, not an option like on the 5 series which is lame. Ride is nice, the power is there. The handling is not as tight as BMW and the looks of the car are nice, but rather bland. The interior is very nice and quality is very good, but noisier than BMW when you're driving on the highway. The MMI (their iDrive) is pretty cool and probably better than idrive imho.

But, I went to "work some numbers" and the sales rep had to go back and forth to talk to her manager like I was in a Chevy dealer, which just turned me off to Audi right then. They quoted me 57% residual value and a 6.1% money factor on a lease, so for a $54,360 car the payment was $927.96 / month.

BMW 545i

Well, I was thinking of getting the 530i until I drove the 545i. The 545i is sweet, noticeable power difference, handles great and very quiet inside. I wish it had the intelligent key and wish the fold down rear seats were standard, which they should be for the $64k car I was looking at. The HUD is pretty cool, but not sure I would like that in the long run. Seemed blurry at times, especially if you're not looking directly at it.

I want the 545i, but am still thinking about the 530i too. 6k difference for the model of 545i I want and I think it's worth it. On the other hand, that adds $136 to the 3 year lease because they will only give a 58% residual on the 545i where it's 60% on the 530i.

If I go with the 530i I may regret that I didn't get the 545 instead. For me, I'm not sure I could live with the fact that I bought a 57k dollar car that has less HP than a Nissan Altima. But you could also argue that if you just want a fast car then go and get a Mitsubishi Evo that will smoke all of these for 25k less.

For 57k I can get the 530i pretty much loaded and a 3 year lease w/ 0 down at $830/month. The 545i at 64k would be 0 down and $966 month. Both leases are at 4.5% money factor (.00187)
This is in SoCal at Crevier BMW in Santa Ana who I believe sells the most BMWs than any other dealer. They seem like good deals to me.

You will NOT get a deal on the new A6 whatsoever. NOT right now.

i love the new A6 .. its nice. but if you look at the numbers, you could lease a 745Li for the same amount that the A6 4.2 will cost you. end of story.

i'm paying $610/month w/ tire guard from the dealer for my 530i (56K) on a 15K/year lease 36 month. that was with 6K down. now that ain't bad ... the a6 3.2 NOT loaded would've cost me $799 for 12K miles/year based on a 48K price. Audi/VW Financial makes it rather hard for them to lease/finance any car right now.

I agree with you totally
bmw is asking way too much for the 530i. 525i shouldn't even exist

Heard the price of the new Audi will be marked-up by about $5000. In my opinion, E60 is still a better car than Audi A6.

About a month ago I got a 65% residual on a 545 - 3 year lease (12k miles).

I see the A6 around a lot here (3.0 diesel version). I love the looks of that car but it still is an audi and all audi's A3,A4,A6,A8 look the same. I love BMW much more since all the BMW models look different so you can see the difference. I have trouble seeying the difference between an A6 and A8.
