Although I believe that BMW has a cradle that only supports a few phones, can you synch any bluetooth phone with the car? Without the cradle, do you only lose the ability to charge the phone while its in the cradle or do you lose other functionality as well?

Not all bleutooth phones work with the E60. There is a list out with compatible phones for the car. I have bough a Siemens S55 to comply with what the car needs.

I've heard a lot of people who tried other phones then recommended and they had trouble pairing and most of them lost steeringwheel controls for the phone.

The cradle conects the handset to power AND the external aerial. BMW produce a snap in adapter for a limited number of handsets.

But you don't need the cradle to make the phone work inside the car. It only doesn't use it's external antenna.
