You won't get any joy syncing the phone book unless you have a phone and software version that matches the official BMW list. I had to get my 6230 swapped for a 6230i to get my phone book synced - and then only the 'default' number.

I don't have any experience with the 6680 but if it's a GSM phone (with a SIM card) then you might have to be sure and save your phone numbers in the SIM and not the phone. Often times, especially with Nokia phones I think, this turns out to be true.
As far as only using phones on the "official BMW list," I don't think that's entirely true. Obviously you'll have success with phones on the list but many people have been successful using phones not on the list. It's pretty much a crap shoot as to what works and what doesn't -- you just have to try, I guess...

I can't even get my 6680 to sync! What did you have to do to get this working, I cannot get the connection established

The point I was making is that all bluetooth phones 'should' connect to the car - but I think only the BMW list phones will transfer the phonebook into the i-Drive - which was why I swapped mine. However, once the phonebook is transferred, it doesn't matter if the numbers are on the SIM or the phone. However (again !) if your numbers are on the phone and you take advantage of the phone number listing facility (i.e. The numbers for Joe Bloggs cell, office and home all under one directory heading of 'Joe Bloggs') then you have to allocate one of the numbers (e.g. cell) as the default number for it to transfer. You won't be able to transfer the other numbers unless you set them up under a seperate directory entry (e.g. Joe Bloggs Cell)
