MY car was manufactured 8/17/04 according to BMW N.A. customer relations they are finding poor reception when bluetooth is enabled. They suggest changing TCU but have not offered to accept any responsibility. The customer service person suggested that I contact the service manager at the dealership and plead my case to him. According to her, the local service manager may be able to get my car sorted out. BUT NO GUARANTEE. I am really disappointed in BMW NA policy on this issue. I will keep you all informed.

I would siggest digging through this forums, i have july 04 manufacturing date and will be getting bluetooth enabled in my car this weekend i will let you know how it goes, I have also attached a service bulletin and from my interpretation your car should be fine, i am just going to be charged $100. There are others in this forum that have similar manufacturing dates and have BT fucntioning properly. I did not bother calling BMWNA i called my service rep and he they are cool with it. Email the Bulletin to your service rep that is if they are not familiar with it
I have 5/2004 production and have had BT enabled. The folks I call claim they can hear me just fine (and they would tell me like it is). They can hear it when I'm moving, but not to the point of annoyance (and no more than a headset), it is clearer when at a stand-still. Not sure of my TCU #, but will probably get around to checking one of these days.
I have been a member of this forum for awhile and did the leg work, I even faxed a copy of the service bulletin that you attached. The dealership still said I needed a new TCU. So I called BMW N.A. for assistance the customer service person agreed with me that my car should work. Then today she calls me and says that it won't work well and I need a new TCU. BMW N.A. will offer no assistance.
I know alot of members have been able to get their phones working I don't know why I'm getting this story.
I have an April 04 build. Last month I got the software upgrade as part of the emissions recall and I got them to do what was necessary to activate the bluetooth. It works pretty well, but some people say there is a fair amount of background noise. The info you are receiving may be true. BMWNA may be finding that the early TCUs don't work well. I think they should fix this under warranty.

Total BS. You can put bluetooth in that car. BMW service bulletins are way off. No worries man go for it.
1. Have CIP software 13.2 or higher. 13.3 is better.
2. Have tech perform tel retrofit for bluetooth software upgrade.
3.Pair your phone to car.
Number 2 is critical to this process!

Just got my car back today with the new steering rack. Dealer did the Bluetooth upgrade on my 03/2004 build car (I took delivery April 8, 2004). It (BT) shows up in the iDrive. Now I just need to get me a Bluetooth phone to see if it pairs and works. My SA says it will work.
