Armed with information posted by several members of this forum, I went to my dealer this morning for the emissions recall and requesting that BT be retrofitted. The service advisor previously told me that it couldn't be done on my car because it was built prior to September 2004. I gave him the service bulletin number and he quickly found and printed the bulletin. This changed everything. He agreed to give the technician a copy of the bulletin and expressed confidence that the retrofit would be accomplished.

Attached is a .pdf copy of BMWNA's new service bulletin covering, among other things, the procedure for retrofiting BT in MY 2004 E60s built between March 2004 and August 2004. This bulletin confirms information posted on this board by stating that "for E60s produced between March 2004 and August 2004, Bluetooth functionality can be added to most of these vehicles by updating the vehicle software using CIP 13.2 or higher. After this is performed 'Retrofit' of 'Tel Bluetooth' needs to be performed." See bulletin, paragraph 5. The bulletin also provides the procedure for "activating bluetooth" after the software is upgraded and "pairing the handset to the vehicle" after activation. These procedures are identical to the steps posted by pharding and others on this board.

The bulletin states that the BT retrofit is not covered under warranty and is at the customer's expense.

Thanks for the update. It's important to note that if you have the CPT9000 installed, activating BT will disable the CPT.

If this is done and you want to revert back to the CPT9000, there is a pretty extensive process that needs to take place.

Bottom line -- only activate BT when you are ready to actually use it...

Why shouldn't the BT software upgrade be covered under warranty? The March 2004 to August 2004 cars came with BT passkey cards. Weren't they supposed to have BT?

I compeltely agree with you DFNDR.

Please refresh my memory. When the E60 first came out, did BMW not advise potential customers that BT was not going to be available? The brochure I received indicated that BT was an available option in the car IIRC.

Now we are put in a position that we have to pay for an option that should have been available at the start of production and one that we were told could be activated in a March production vehicle (as in my case).

When I ordered my car for May delivery, the salesman told me that it would have BT. When the car was delivered in Mid-May, he told me that BMW was having problems with BT and that they hoped to resolve them soon. From May until December, they kept telling me that they didn't know anything about making the BT work. When I started reading this board, I found detailed info and brought it to the dealer yesterday. Today they called to say the car is done, the BT retrofit is complete and there is no charge. I will pick it up tonite and get a BT phone before the stores close.
