My Ride: '04 530d Executive, all options except sunroof and comfort seats
ECU remapped by ZipTuning to 260+bhp.
I think you are getting some stuff mixed up here.
The original phone in my armrest was a Motorola type thing. It had a SIM card holder in de bottom and a removable phone in the top. The removable phone was linked to the car via bluetooth, the holder was connected via a wire.
I ripped the whole thing out, took out the removable phone and put my second SIM (the same number as my iPhone) in the holder. I then took out the center console wood thing from my rear seat and reconnected the phone holder there and put it under the fridge (i'll get to that in a moment). I taped it to the wall so it wouldn't move around.
I then build a standard Brodit holder in my center armrest en connected it to my Dension which is in my glovebox (long cable, lots of cursing, 1 hour later).
When i enter the car, i put the iPhone in the brodit holder and touch yes (so it goes into airplane mode).
The second sim in the original Motorola phone then takes over and connects the car to the cell network. (So i can call from the car)
The fridge is the compartment under the armrest. Open up your armrest, there's your phone, then push the button at the top of the phone holder and voila, another compartment.
Notice how this compartment has no gaps at the bottom. That's because it's meant to keep some cans of soda in it. It also has 2 airco outputs which ALWAYS blow cold air into the compartment.
Voila, fridge. (I know, it's not a REAL fridge, but it keeps the contents very cold)
Now for my iPhone, when i turn on my "detectability" in the idrive menu, i can see the car from every other phone and device i have, but simply not from my iPhone.
I turn on the bluetooth on my iPhone and set it to detect, but it simply keeps on searching and never finds the car.
My businesspartner also has an iPhone and his iPhone doesn't detect the car either.
I have the latest idrive software (updated last friday) and the latest iPhone software (2.2).
(It's a 3G BTW)

that is wierd how some of your phones does not work on bluetooth.
As for charging and using the phone for music, I have used it with the Ipod integration kit and have bluetooth connectivity too.
I used an adapter so that it can charge and work fine. If you see my earlier post, that adapter might help for some users. (Dension gateway).
Hope it helps. Good luck.

As others have mentioned, get the ipod integration (glove box), and pick up a 2nd ipod (nano or classic) and just keep it in the car all the time. itunes can sync to both iphone and 2nd ipod. I have one in the glove box and never take it out unless I want to update the playlists......
Then your iphone is free to stay in your pocket/on your belt when you jump in and out of the car.

You won't regret it. The Iphone dock is easy to put the phone and take the phone out once you leave the car.

When my son ruined his last ipod by wrapping his headphones around the ipod and torquing the plug too often which resulted in a bad earphone inlet plug on the ipod. Apple wanted $150 to repair it and only $20 as a trade in, I thought, wait a minute, the bottom ipod inlet is still good, so i did exactly what you guys suggested. I use it 24/7 plugged in my glovebox in the ipod adaptor. The ipod is not usable for any other application but is perfect for this. I almost sold it back to apple for $20 bucks and I dont have to plug my new ipod touch into my car at all.

Is your phone in airplane mode though?
I would hope the IPOD adapter works this way otherwise it is a pretty crappy device for the money if a $50 rf converter can do more then it. I need to find out because I am trying to decide between the Aux input or Ipod apapter and this is a make or break point for me.

I have the dension 500 now and it works even better than the Ipod integration kit. I have a posting review of the IPOD BMW kit and dension gateway 500 kit.
