....in the center armrest/console of an e60. It supposed gives the phone stronger signal access through the antenna array of the car as well as charging the iPhone(important considering that the Bluetooth setting tends to chew the battery.

My sales person was unclear of this accessory. Any information will be much appreciated.

Not exactly what you wanted, but I wanted something that I can grab my phone easily, instead of being stuck in the armrest.
Also, this is connected to the Ipod integration kit.

There are different snap-in adapaters available for many phones. I have a blackberry 8130 (pearl) installed. It's one of the best accessory features of the car, in that it gets the phone out of the way with great bluetooth functionality, and charging while the car is running (no charging when the car is off, unfortunately). While I had also read claims that signal reception would be better (alledgedly tying the cell phone into the shark fin antenna), I have demonstrated time and again that this is not true, at least not for my blackberry -- reception when in marginal signal strength areas is actually slightly WORSE than if the phone is brought out and laid on the dash. I have had to do that occasionally when in the middle of an important call, parking right in the edge of reception and holding the phone up to the windshield or dash to get reception to hold. In the cradle it would drop every time.

Check this link out from the "other" E60 forum
DIY install of snap-in adapter
It costs about $220 for all of the parts (+ labor if you do not DIY) so I haven't quite justified getting it myself, just yet.

There's apparently no snap-in adapter for the 3G iPhone yet (just talked to the dealer). The one they have is too shallow for the rounded back on the 3G.

Last time I asked the dealer, it was not available as yet but registered on the parts system. I must give them another call to check the current status.
