i am able to place emergency 911 calls directly from my e60 by using the built in mic and speakers like a speaker phone. since the dialer is built into idrive, this led me to wonder if bmw can initiate/program a cellular phone feature directly into the car without using an external cell phone?
in other words can i make my car a cell phone, one with its own number?
if not,
apart from the bmw telephone (motorola v60i i think) which other phones are supported to be used in the 'communications' of idrive in north america/canada?
can someone please show me this information? appreciated.

Rollee: There is a cell phone on a chip somwhere inside our car. Outgoing calls, except to 911 and bmw assist are disabled; good luck hacking that and please let us know if you do and how you did it!! Incoming calls, however, are very possible and many have reported getting wrong numbers and 911 is able to call them back after the user hangs up, embarrassed. The trick/secret is to get whoever calls you to report the number they called and, voilla, free incoming phone calls.

i will look into it and post any findings. i just love to dial directly from my car-idrive, i don't mind paying to activate the service for its the supreme convenience. i am not in favour for the idea of connecting an external cell phone into the car.
