Can you use SMS in your car? a question about TMC+ in the UK

My Ride: 520D 2006 - Media Package, M-tec Kit, Lighting package, extended lights, Leather seats, Auto High beam. Carbon Black, with black leather.
I was just wondering, if its common not to have the SMS tab when you have the top phone & nav package? I ask this because the e46 has SMS. And i'd really like to have it in my car.
Also does TMC+ work in the UK, and is it part of the BMW assist or BMW online? What advantages does TMC+ have over TMC?

SMS only works through your phone. You can receive them and you can send them, but on the screen you can only read incoming messages.
BMW Assist provides a service named VI+, what is TMC+. I dunno if BMW Assist does this in the UK, they do in Germany.
TMC is based on the messages coming from humans through the radio stations. TMC+/VI+ uses the sensors in the highways and knows much better when and where there is a problem. Much more exact.

See i dont even have an SMS tab on my i drive screen. There is no way of me looking at the message other than directly at the phone. So would you say there is something wrong?
