BTUM Phonebook/Speech Activation

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
HI guys,
I spent a couple hours adding phone numbers to my E815 cell phone, and adding spoken names...only to find out that the little bugger pronounces them all on its own, without my help.
Anyway, went out, pressed the Update blue button, and a couple of minutes later, all my new entries were up in lights on the screen. However, when I hit the Voice Activation button on the wheel, it didn't have a clue as to what was going on. It kept trying until I told it to Cancel.
Now, reading the Owner's manual (car), I see that I need to record commands etc. So, I am writing to confirm that I have to do this IN DUPLICATE to those already lodged on the cellphone? (Would seem easier just to dictate the phone number shown on the screen....)
In the phone owners manual, it says for voice activation, the phone must be open and voice button pushed; I had hoped that the BTUM would handle this, OR, must I leave the phone open/unfolded and then it will work?
Any tips on the BMW recording procedure? I'll have to try that tomorrow in daylight.
Forgive my goofiness; I'm coming from an 8 yo StarTac...that I never used.
