Guy's

First let me start off by saying the forum has worked wonders for me, I can't thank everyone enough for all their impute on just about everything. I have researched passed threads and gathered a ton of information thus allowing me to be well educated on my car.

Okay now to the topic at hand....

I recently had the aux port installed on MY 2/04 545i, and at first everything seemed to be fine other then the radio stations turning off periodically. Quick fix was to enable RDS, everything is fine now. A couple of days later the TCU unit died, dealer replaced it with part # 1-84-10-6-972-696. This was great because now I would finally have BT. Boy was I wrong. According to my dealer they said that everything is pre wired but I would still need to upgrade to a new TCU that had the BT module. Can this be true????

Looking at past threads this is the latest hardware version and should only need some sw. Am I missing something here, or does my dealer want to take me for the ride?

Check your part number looks like it should be 84106978659 which became available AFTER 09/04 and is compatible with BT. However, you may not have the wirirg, but I don't think that is the case. Wiring only applies to teh cradle issue. I assume in your search you came across the bulletin that indicated you need a new TCU for pre 03/04 builds which you have and you got if it is the PN above.

I am quoting the appropriate paragraph from SIB 841304 and updated June 05 here:

4. For E60/63/64 vehicles produced from 3/04 to 8/04, Bluetooth? functionality can be added to most of these vehicles by updating the vehicle software using CIP 13.2 or higher. After this is performed "Retrofit" of "Tel Bluetooth" needs to be performed. Follow the procedure as described in this Service Information for "Activating Bluetooth" and "Pairing the Handset". Vehicles prior to 3/04 would need to have the TCU replaced with the 2005 MY TCU at the customer's expense and the vehicle updated to CIP 13.2 or higher. Phone docking cradles may not be added to these vehicles because of wiring incompatibility. Note: This software update and retrofit is not covered under warranty and is at the customer's expense.
