Yeah, it's a killer for the manufacturer and dealers, but a benefit for us, as we get the new stuff.? Too bad we have to deal with bugs along the way.

Are we going to be paying big $$$ for upgrades once the warranty runs out?
Is this going to be a BMW profit center, just like MicroStupid?

And, they're looking into getting a cradle for my phone.? The part number on the X5 sire was not matching anything, but they're calling BMW tech support on Monday to see if they can find a cradle that'll work with teh V551.? That would be nice.? For now, it's in the glove box, plugged into the 12V adaptor underneath.

What? 12V adaptor underneath?

Peace.

There's a cig lighter adaptor under the glovebox on US cars. Get down on the floor in the passenger area and look up, at the front of the car. It's next to the light under the glovebox. You can plug in there and run the cable up to the inside of the glovebox.

I think some folks have already said they've been charged for upgrades. If there are no bugs and it's just for new features, you really should pay. As long as they keep releasing buggy software, they have to pay. A defect is a defect, software or hardware is irrelevant as warranty goes.

[quote name='John W' date='Nov 24 2004, 04:34 PM']I got my car back today. The dealer had it for two days for:

1.? Replace cracked windshield
2.? Replace stock steering wheel with heated wheel. No heat, but much thicker wheel with better feel.
3.? Upgrade software. Now v 13.3 - no v 14 here yet.
4.? Fix creaky doors - carbaflowed
5.? Fix stitching in driver's seat.? Some stitching was failing - you'd never know now.

These guys did an amazing job. The car is flawless, everything I complained about in the software is fixed, I love the new steering wheel, I love the Bluetooth connectivity and voice command phone.?

My phone is a Cingular Motorola V551.? Works fine, address book synced, etc.? It was my dealer's first time, and they had no problem. My car is a May 2004 build.

It's like getting a new car.? I honestly don't notice that much steering change.? I expected a big difference. If it changed, which folks are saying, it's subtle, or there's a setting that they didn't set for me.

I love those guys.?

i have a 04/04 production but my dealer couldn't do the bt for me . what did you tell them ? any magic words you can teach my clueless dealer?

I just told them I'd heard that BT was now available for my car. The work order said "inspect if Bluetooth software is available." They checked it out and activated.

Their notes said "performed retrofit added bluetooth with SW 13.3. Activated and paired with customer's phone."

Simple as that. They called 1/2 way through to get my phone and said "the tech's got 5 or 6 pages of instructions and he's all ready to go." They needed me to drop off my phone to be able to pair it.

No special words, they just need to call tech support if they aren't aware of it. This was my dealer's first time and it was a no-brainer.

That is great to hear John. I have a service appointment with East Bay next week to do BlueTooth (Sony T637) and upgrade my software as part of a previous DME recall campaign. I'm also going to have them activate the rear airbags and do a couple other things as well. They are a center of excellence (three years running), so they're really working to keep the ratings up and customers happy. What kind of loaner did you get? I was in there a couple weeks ago getting my X5 CPO'd for a family member and got a X3, hoping for a Z4 next time

As far as the cradle goes, one of the parts guys at Allison supposedly has the inside line on some cradles, not sure about the one you mention. I think the guy's name is Mike, but it has been awhile since I spoke with him. Parts is about the only thing I go to Allison for, which is a shame given that they are 5 minutes from my office. I'll drive the extra 30 minutes from my home in Fremont for better service every time.

I gave East Bay the X5 info and Luis - head of parts - is looking into it, too. Let's all hope they find that the X5 adaptors exist and can fit into the E60s.

I had a 325 loaner. Nothing like my 5, but better than a rental car. It's generally tough to get a loaner at EB. This was the second time in 4 years that I haven't had a rental car.

No nav.?

I use East Bay BMW in Pleasanton.? They're the best.

Cool and thanks for the info regarding the cradle. I just had a bad experience at Concord so will give East Bay a try next time around.

Do voice commands work with your Bluetooth? (since you have no Nav)

Yes. It did not work on my drive home from the dealer for some reason, but remarkably it is working fine now. The voice recognition is quite good. You can speak in a normal voice and seems to pick up everthing.

I am finding that I will need the cradle or a phone charger in the car because the battery drains rather quickly with BT.
