I'm intrigued by the Pearl as well. My big problem is I've been a Palm user since the first PalmPilot came out. I have a ton of data in my contacts, etc. so I'm not excited about the prospect of exporting that data over to whatever format RIM needs for the Blackberry. Even if I took that plunge, it's likely that I will run into the memory limitations that beamerlover seems to be having (in this thread.)

At this point, I'm not impressed with the Treo 650 (from a phone standpoint) and since I'm pretty much stuck with Cingular, I can't get the Pearl anyway so I'm probably just going to "rough it" a while longer...

Rudy, have you looked into Cingular's 8125 Pocket PC? My hubby got a demo from work and it's pretty neat. It's windows based so it can push email from exchange and it holds a lot of contacts. Just a thought.

Either way, Blackberry or Windows, I'll have a huge data migration project on my hands (even with all the so called "utilities" that they have for tranferring data to and from Outlook, etc.) I'm fine with the Palm OS from a contact management standpoint, I'm just not happy with the phone performance of the Treo. I suppose I'm just going to wait until I can demo the next generation Treo (when Cingular gets it) or who knows what else I might do as things change...

Just FYI, Blackberry's desktop manager software is fully integrated with Outlook, so you wouldn't have to enter contacts, notes, etc., into Blackberry's software, just keep your Outlook up-to-date and desktop manager will pull everything from it (sorry if y'all already know this, but this is my first Blackberry and I have never owned a PDA that wasn't Windows/Outlook based).

Also, the Pearl has seamless transfer during mid-call from handheld to vehicle.

I've added/updated contacts while driving, but vehicle doesn't add/update contacts in iDrive. You can call from the handheld and it will work, but until you turn off BT or the vehicle and get a new transfer, the added/updated contact will not appear in iDrive. If you do call a contact not in iDrive but in the contact list after updating, your display will show "*****."

Cheers

Yeah, I'm fully aware of the process of using Outlook as the "middle man." I don't use Outlook and since the transfer from Palm to Outlook doesn't work perfectly, the transfer from Outlook to Blackberry ends up less than perfect as well.

It looks like I may have to keep considering the switch though -- the CEO of RIM (Blackberry) just bought the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL Hockey) today. If he keeps the team in the city (which he claims he will) then I'll gain an allegiance toward Blackberry and feel better about dumping Palm...

LOL Rudy, I like your thought process.

I took the plunge and "updgraded" to the Pearl... got a sweet deal on it as well! Can't wait to get it and see how it works.

I have a Pearl also, and was able to easily pair and upload the address book. I do have one issue. When I call my office voicemail, I have the pauses inserted in the address book entry in the Pearl. When I dial with the Pearl, it works fine. If I chose my office voicemail from the iDrive menu and dial, it locks up and doesn't go through (it just says "no active calls"). I have a few pauses in a row to give it more time to connect, so maybe this is the trip up? Does your iDrive work with pauses inserted in your address book?

Do you happen to know what software version the car is running? There was a "pause bug" that was fixed in later version.

My build date was February '07, but I think the software is one of the 2 September '06 versions.
