you'll still needs a carrier for voice and data service for the phone. unless you intend on using the device on Wifi only, or unless you can jailbreak a carrier's service for free.

According to "Geohotz" @ blackra1n.com he already jailbreaked it for OS4. He is just waiting for OS4 to be released in couple of weeks.
P.S. I am pre-ordering few of them on June 15th!!

No need I have my evo 4g 
not really sure why anyone would need both. The evo 4g does everything the iphone does and more. Oh and I'm a android dev... I've had the phone since google I/O developers conference in san fran 3 weeks ago. Battery life is great i end my days with atleast 40 percent or more. Plus it's been rooted prior to even being released. Running 2.2 froyo on mine now this thing flies. The rate android is growing and how fast the hardware is advancing, Apple's going to have to struggle keeping up with the dual core chipsets that have already been announced for the beginning of 2011, I can just imagine what devices those will show up in.

I am thinking I will get it too. I can upgrade and get it for $199, obviously will be tethered on for another 2 years. Oh well, it's like like AT&T haven't contracted my life away anyways.
