It looks like there is some confusion about the different Aluminum trims discussed in this thread. Here is a list of all the ALU or silver trims available from BMW (at least the ones that I remember):
1. Titan--not really metal at all, just painted plastic.
2. ALU Feinschliff--fine grain brushed aluminum. All the trim pieces are available in Feinschliff except for the panel behind the center console.
3. ALU Shadow--Slightly coarser grain brushed aluminum and it has a little bit of gray in it when compared to ALU Feinschliff. This is the trim that comes on the M5. The piece behind the center console AND the piece below the CD/DVD drives are not available in ALU Shadow.
4. ALU Cube--has a repeated small cube designs on it. Standard on M-Sport package in most countries.
5. ALU Wave--has a repeated wave pattern on it.
6. I have a feeling that there is another one, but I can't remember now.
So the car in the first three pictures of the very first post in this thread (M5 gray interior) has the ALU Shadow trim. This is the one I got to replace the Anthracite wood trim in my car. As I said the piece below the CD/DVD drive and the piece at the rear of the center console are not available in ALU Shadow. Since the ALU Feinschliff does have the CD/DVD piece I used that instead. Since it is sitting in a vertical position and the piece next to it (ash tray cover and shifter surround) is in a horizontal position they get different lighting angles all the time which helps mask the slight difference, so most people can't tell the difference.
The 4th and 5th picture in the first post (beige interior) are NOT ALU Cube as discussed above. This is the ALU Wave. It is very very rare.
There are no pictures of ALU Cube, ALU Feinschliff, or Titan in this thread, but you can find them if you do a search. As a matter of fact I think I started a thread of all the ALU trims a long time ago when I was trying to figure out the differences myself before I bought mine. I'll see if I can find that thread and will post a link to it here.
One more thing, even though ALU Shadow has a slightly coarser grain and slightly grayish shade when compared to the ALU Feinscliff you can't really notice the difference unless you are holding the tirm pieces next to each other (you certainly can't notice the difference in pictures). Essentially they look more or less the same.
Hope this helped clear it up a bit.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown Rody. I always wondered about the different Alu trims.
