Ouch. :'(
I owned a 2001 E38 740i Sport before getting this 550, and I loved that 7 series. I think it's one of the most handsome and majestic cars ever made and whenever I see a nice one still it turns my head. And it was a very sporty drive.
The truth is that I think the 550 is a direct descendant of the 740 - because the newer 7 series (E65) is something altogether different. And I didn't give up much space either as the interior of the 550 is nearly as spacious as the 740 and almost as luxurious.
Yet the 550 is a better car, much better. It will do laps around the E38 in handling. It has gobs more power while carrying around hundreds of pounds less weight. The ride of the 550 is as rock solid as the 740, but the 550 has better balance. The 550 gets better gas mileage (and puts out fewer pollutants). And the toys in the 550 are every bit as plentiful as the E38 (and then some, I say).
You get all of this for a sticker price that is about $4,000 to $5,000 less than the 740 was five years ago!
So it gets down to styling. I may be in a minority but I think both machines look fantastic. I love the 7 for its classic good looks, which I don't think will ever look out of date. And I love the 5er for its stand-out style, which I think is so cutting edge that it will merely look contemporary 5 years from now.
Regardless, the cool thing is that driving any BMW can put a smile on your face, and I've got a huge grin on mine right now.

Some try to knock the style of the E60 by saying that you can't tell it apart from any of the Korean or Japanese cars.

[/quote]LOL! And it's the E65 people who are saying this??
I have nothing against the E65 myself, but maybe someone should tell them that the E65 is the original and most well known "ugly" BMW! The 7 Series has gotten WAYYYY more bad press and insults for being "ugly" than E60 ever got. What the hell kind of crack are they on?

My Ride: (USA) 645Ci, Silver Gray, Chateau, Cold Weather PKG, Premium Sound PKG, Sport PKG, Step, NAV [Std Equip in 645], HUD, Satellite (SIRIUS) Radio, Aux Input, Bluetooth enabled using iPhone 3GS w/ adapter cradle - Build date - 01/05, Baby delivered 2/24/05
All the E6x models are what separate us from the Korean/Japanese cars. More cutting edge, better drive, etc. The Japanese do great electronics and maybe their entertainment/nav/bluetooth systems are better (in the cars) but I do not "drive" my radio and that's what I want to do; drive. And now look at how they are trying to copy the BMW drive model - they cannot do it but they are tryin'. So E38s are close, E65s are closer, but as already noted, E60 (and of course my E63) are the best drivers. Tell 'em to eat dirt (suck eggs- whatever) over there on ur 7 forum.
