when your friend gets his car, call me . ill show your what 450NM from 3200-6100rpm does, as ive run 0-100 in roughly 6s

However good diesels are, they cannot compare to equivalent petrol engines. Otherwise the Enzo
and Veyron would be running on diesel

so is the 535d acceleration as quick as your Old Subaru Impreza which had roughly 10 more horsepower ? i think not

unless by real-world you mean overtaking on the highway

yes i have on the 12 of december, when the first one came to bulgaria. I said it in my first post but it was in bulgarian

once again we are talking about peak torque levels of a diesel engine over a region of about 700rpm, and then
much lower torque levels. And a redline at 4800rpm. In gear times would be quicker, as for race-acceleration, it
will be slower . just

0-62mph in the 745li is 6.4 in the 745d is 6.6. The 745li will still be quicker

As for the 760li , its just a totally different animal, with 445bhp and 600nm . it will smoke the 745d's ass ... in almost any gear (well if its over 3000rpm in the gear)
when your friend gets his car, call me . ill show your what 450NM from 3200-6100rpm does, as ive run 0-100 in roughly 6s

I think the problem is one of semantics and what people mean by - quicker.

Petrol and diesel engines have very different torque curves agreed, but although deisel's torque does drop sharply at higher revs, it doesn't immediately dissapear to nothing.

By real world driving I think most people mean in-gear acceleration. This is where on a road a diesel can take the edge over a petrol car. On a track, a high revving petrol car can be kept in the peak powerband - on a road this can't be done as easily, so the higher torque at lower revs in a diesel can make them quicker (on the road).

On a track - well with BMW engines I think it starts to depend on the way the track is laid out and the gearing / shift points. They are VERY evenly matched - more so than for any other manufacturer. In most cases though, I accept that an equivalent petrol engine will have the better chance on the track.

In short, I think it's about useable speed and in many situations on the road (although there won't be a lot in it) the 745d might easily better the 745li.

In respect of the 760 - fair comment - I was just getting carried away with the idea of a sequential turbo set-up on a 4.5 litre v8 diesel.

Incidentally, what do you think of my comment that they don't seem to be pushing the 745d performance like they have with the 3.0litre diesel in the 535d?

(oh and as a PS - I would not have dreamed of having a diesel until 2 years ago)

I disagree same weight and power diesel is almost always faster. Things have moved on more money are being invested to develop diesel technology. Add 350 kg to my WRX and the Beema will be faster any day only possible exception being the 4 wheel drive 5000rpm launch with sidestep which you cant do in an auto rwd. Take the Audi A8 for example the old 4.0 (275hp) diesel was giving the 4.2 (333) petrol a hard time, the new 4.2 (326hp) diesel simply destroys it eventhough its 170kg heavier.

That day may come!

I am sure you have seen this:

Audi Le Mans Diesel

This is a fairly major step and if diesel / petrol engine technologies continue to develop at the speed they have over the last 5 years, then in a few years time diesel will almost certainly be a viable option for a high performance sportscar.

They don't even sound like tractors anymoreI

4423cm3 engine with 750nm from 1900-2500rpm and 330bhp at 3800rpm. I think it was sequential
AFAIK it is one turbo to each bank and not sequential.

you can! you could buy a audi r8 through the dealership and with a little modification can be made road legal. I can't remember where I heard this but i think its part of Le Man regulations that they have to be road going cars too. Eg the old corvette c5R, ferrari 360 and 575. However they will obviously be HUGELY expensive to buy and maintain... we can only dream! :'(
