Trademarks Filed by BMW Could Mean 8-Series Return
In a discovery made by Auto Express, BMW has filed trademarks for a new series of cars beginning with the number eight. The list of trademarks includes: 825, 830, 835, 845, 850, and 860. Much to our delight, BMW has also filed for M850 and M8 (mate?).
The new 8-Series will likely be set inline as an S-Class coupe fighter as it will probably borrow from the 7-Series platform. The eight powertrain levels offered in this new top-of-the-line BMW grand tourer give consumers a wide range of options – whereas the Mercedes S-Class offers a paltry four.
This 8-Series trademarking could also signal a move that BMW will push down the 6-Series’ size making it more ideal competition for the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT – something BMW has been lacking. We’d certainly jump at the thought of a leaner, meaner, more agile 6er. Especially in the sportier trim levels.
As it sits now, there are no guesstimates on when we might see an actual 8-Series, or even a prototype. There have been groans for a respawn of the 8er since the E31 died in 1999, and these trademark filings could be the mark of something special on the horizon. We only hope that when the car does officially comes to fruition, it comes with the supremely cool flip-up headlights.
