Snow Won’t Stop YouTubers From Testing the M8 Competition Cabriolet
Despite its subdued looks and luxurious nature, this BMW can still burn rubber with the best of them.
The new BMW M8 Competition cabriolet. It slices, it dices. It does burnouts and donuts. And if you drive it with the top down in the middle of winter, it’s not even that cold — well, not according to Canadians Jakub and Yuri.
Despite the wintry weather conditions, The Straight Pipes got their hands on the new M car, zipped up their parkas, and put it through the wringer. With 617 horsepower and 535 lb/ft of torque on tap, the hosts should have no problem getting into (and out of) trouble.
As Jakub says, “This is next level. This is about 100 horsepower on top of the M850i that we drove.” So, why are they testing it in the winter? It’s simple — they didn’t want to lose the opportunity, and they refused to test a convertible with the top up.
They also wanted to prove that it’s possible to drive a powerful car even in cold, wet weather. After watching the video, we’d call that last one a resounding success.
Jakub and Yuri really like the M8 Competition Cabriolet. They praise its power, its handling, and its creature comforts throughout the entire video. However, they claim that it doesn’t do quite enough to differentiate itself from the M850i. Despite the power increase and various other tweaks, it still feels very similar.
That’s not a bad thing, though. After all, the M850i is an already great car. Even making it incrementally better is an accomplishment.
Of course, despite being an M car, this is still a grand tourer at heart. As Jakub says, “It’s still very, very comfortable, even though it’s called the ‘Competition’ model.” That’s not a bad thing.
The interior of the BMW M8 Competition Cabriolet is loaded up with tech features and carbon fiber accents. Our favorite feature? The detailed 360-degree camera.
When all is said and done, the M8 Competition cabriolet is a great car. However, Yuri and Jakub just don’t think it’s good enough to be worth the substantial price premium over the M850i.
