BMW has confirmed that its Motorsport division will unveil the first-ever battery-powered M model by the end of 2021.

BMW is aggressively expanding its electric vehicle range, as the Bavarian automaker’s electrification strategy has brought us many exciting models so far. The iX electric SUV is the latest addition to its battery-powered lineup. Better still, BMW likely wants to electrify its entire portfolio.

BMW released its sales report revealing that its subsidiary, Rolls-Royce, is also developing an all-electric model, and of course will share components with the i7 and iX. However, BMW has now announced that its Motorsport division will soon unveil the first-ever battery-only M model. The electric vehicle will be introduced by the end of the year.

2020 was a milestone year for BMW, and the company managed to set a sales record even amidst the ongoing pandemic. The CEO of BMW’s M division, Marcus Flasch used the joyous occasion to comment on the brand’s recent achievement, and tease M division’s upcoming models. “It is remarkable that it was possible to achieve the new sales record even before the launch of our most important models,” said Flasch, in a recent press statement.

So far, BMW has refrained from sharing any details or specifications of the upcoming model. BMW may use its i4 (pictured above) nameplate to launch the first-ever all-electric M-model. In which case, we will probably see an M badge on BMW i4’s performance variant. BMW i4 might feature a dual electric motor drivetrain capable of churning out around 500 HP of power.

It is also possible that BMW’s world-renowned Motorsport division might introduce its first-ever battery-powered offering in a high-performance SUV avatar. Crossovers and SUVs are some of the most sought-after body types in the market right now. The excitement surrounding the all-new BMW iX is a testament to the popularity of electric highriders.

According to recent industry rumors, BMW’s X8 product line might also be under consideration to be the model range that receives the first electric-only M variant. Flasch also announced that we can expect plenty of treats to come our way in 2022, “a year full of surprises.”

“If I mention the keyword special edition models, it should be clear what our customers can look forward to during the anniversary year,” said Flausch.
