New high-performance SUV packs a 2.0-liter turbo-four and an eight-speed automatic under its sharp exterior.

A few months ago, BMW revealed its latest version of the first-gen X2, one geared towards high-performance while providing all the luxury the Bavarians are known for. We speak, of course, of the X2 M35i, whose underpinnings also anchor those of the X1 and corporate cousin Mini Countryman.

This week, the newest addition to the X2 family was launched before the global media, featuring a gallery of nearly every angle one could get of the little ‘sports activity coupe.’ Here’s what you need to know about the X2 M35i.

The 2019 X2 M35i arrives with the 2.0-liter TwinPower turbo-four, making 302 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque through all corners via an eight-speed automatic. The power moves the luxury performance subcompact’s standard 19-inch wheels from zero to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, no doubt helped by the onboard launch control to make launches off the line a smoother affair.

Inside await Apple CarPlay standard for a year, plus a handful of packages that will elevate your BMW to higher summits. And of course, the newest X2 has exclusive M sports seats to provide comfort on the long stretches, support for the twisties in between. Finally, an optional heads-up display offers all the information you need without having to take your eyes off the road.

The M Sport features figure into the X2 M35i’s suspension, too. The M Sport front diff minimizes potential loss of traction of the front wheels, while the upgraded brakes bring more stopping power than standard. Guiding the affair is fairly direct and precise, too, while the ride is low to the ground and stiffer for less body roll.
