Watch the Evolution of the BMW 3 Series in 90 Seconds
40 years is a long time, especially in car years. In the last four decades, companies have been born, others have died, just about every performance record has been broken a hundred times, and the technology is off the charts in comparison to what it used to be. But through all the change, if you have a recipe that works, why get rid of it? That’s the thinking BMW has used, as it has kept the same general idea for the 3 Series since 1975.
Of course, there have been multiple updates, refreshes, and advancements since the original. The car is currently in its sixth generation and has too many variations to list, most notably the M3s. Its also been used as the base for many a racing series, including the World of Champions, DTM, and the ALMS. It’s had four-cylinder, six-cylinder, and eight-cylinder engines. It even used a flat-plane crank at one point, and has used turbos and twin-turbos.
See what else has changed in the video below, which offers up a quick animated evolution of the BMW 3 Series.
