Perfection: E90 M3 Stuffed Into 135i
It is a very unpopular opinion, but I think that the E90 BMW M3 is one of the best M3s of all time. I understand the older models have that crispness and simplicity missing from the new cars, but there is no denying the drivetrain of the E90 with that trick rear-diff, crisp manual transmission, and thumping V8 engine. The enthusiast world rejoiced when it was announced that the smaller 1 Series was getting a go-faster model, as we all thought this would finally be the convergence of the best parts of the modern M3 and the classic models.
But it wasn’t to be. The 1 Series M and the M135i were both great, fun machines, but they were lacking, mostly due to the internal politics that would keep them from stepping into the territory of the M3.
But if BMW won’t give you the M3/1 Series hybrid you want, build it yourself. On this episode of /Drive, Matt Farah takes a look at a BMW 135i that has been given an M3 transplant. The front and rear subframes, engine, transmission, rear differential, and lots of the suspension components are all pulled straight from a wrecked E92 and crammed under the bulging fenders of the 135i.
It is everything I ever wanted in a car. It makes me wish this slippery slope garbage about gay marriage was true so I could legally marry this machine and keep it to myself forever unto death do we part.
To tide myself over until that “inevitable” day when I can marry a car, I will just play this video on repeat and listen to the sonorous and angry V8 wail as Matt flogs the little coupe down some lovely back roads.
