Decades Later, BMW E30 Continues to Please

E30 BMW M3

Ah, the venerable E30 M3, the every-man’s race car. Built for a purpose, this icon was almost an icon on accident. The factories in Bavaria churned out this ultimate driving machine because they had to — homologation rules for DTM racing dictated road-going versions of the race cars must be made if they wanted to continue to race competitively. And suddenly, buyers world-wide simply gobbled them up.

The E30 M3 has seen a more modern version of something that until recently had only happened in the ’70s and ’80s: appreciation. Not that they haven’t always been lauded as one of the best cars around, but appreciation in the sense of price. Some of these little road-going race cars were purchased quite reasonably in the upper teens just a number of years ago, but recently they have begun to skyrocket. As Jalopnik explains in the video below, sometimes even into the $50,000 (!) range.

Seems like a bit of a stretch, but the old adage rings true: they just don’t make ’em like they used to. We suspect you’ll agree after watching Jalopnik’s video, but please let us know what you think.
