BMW says there are no Plans for an M3/M4 CSL
BMW’s product manager for small to mid-sized cars, Matt Collins recently said the company has no plans for featherweight CSL versions of the new M3 and M4.
Collins told Top Gear BMW designed the F80 M3 and F82 M4 to be CSLs from the beginning. “Rather than doing a halfway house to begin with, and then rolling out a CSL, we thought we’d make the ‘real’ car as light as we possibly could. So we’ve no plans whatsoever to make a lighter, harder version just yet.”
It appears BMW’s willingness to go all the way with removing weight from the F80/F82 has paid off. At 3,300 pounds, the M4 weighs 176 pounds less than a comparably equipped E92 M3. With less weight to move around, BMW says the M3 and M4 will shoot to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds when equipped with the M dual-clutch transmission … that’s more than half a second quicker than the E90/E92.
Even though BMW says there are no plans for M3 and M4 CSLs, the two words “just yet” were appended to that official statement. What do you think “just yet” means? Let us know in the comments or in our forum if you think there will be hardcore versions of the F80/F82 toward the end of this generation’s production run.
