BMW M2 CS Racing: A Track-Only Precision Tool

Bavarian automaker has launched a race-spec version of the BMW M2 CS, an entry-level circuit-only racer.

BMW is all set to introduce the next generation 2 Series later this month, but that doesn’t mean the F22 version has nothing exciting coming its way. The Munich, Germany-based automaker decided to give the current generation 2-Series a send-off that befits a hero. The company’s Japanese division launched a track-focused version of the BMW M2 CS, which was introduced as an entry-level track-only racer.

The announcement came from BMW Japan. The new circuit-only model was developed by BMW’s hallowed M division and adopts the M2 CS Racing moniker. The track-only version is powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six turbocharged motor, like the one that powers the road-legal model. The track racer is available in two tunes, which include a 360 HP model, and a top-of-the-line 444 HP variant.

BMW M2 CS Racing’s road-legal version can also be equipped with a 444 HP powerplant, which also produces 406 lb-ft of peak torque. Equipped with its M TwinPower inline-six engine, the standard BMW M2 CS can accelerate to 60 MPH from a complete standstill in just 3.8 seconds. The car can also achieve a top speed of 174 MPH with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Unlike the road-going model, however, the BMW M2 CS Racing is only available with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Drivers can also configure the power output and augment the driving dynamics of M2 CS Racing with the help of BMW’s performance level program. The company’s suite is offered on a USB drive and has been designed to deliver optimum performance for each race.

The BMW M2 CS Racing also gets a special mechanical limited-slip differential, which comes equipped with a preload-type independent cooling system. The car even gets a race-spec driveshaft which sends power to the rear wheels. As one would expect, the cabin of the M2CS Racing has been stripped down to a bare minimum in a bid to save weight.

The interior now features a pair of Recaro seats, an illuminated switch panel, and a detachable yoke steering. Prices for the entry-level BMW M2 CS start at $135,000 (¥14,990,000) and the top of the range model gets a $162,000 (¥17,990,000) price tag.
