Thanks to a massive infusion of power, this BMW 635 CSi is the kind of rig we’d want to drive just about everywhere.

BMW has long been known for building the “world’s greatest driving machines,” but those vehicles have come in many forms. Some are small, some are large, others are sedans or even wagons. Like many automakers, BMW’s offerings have changed considerably over the years, with enthusiasts preferring certain generations over others, going to battle online to defend their personal choices. But for us, older Bimmers are where it’s at, and this amazing BMW 635 CSi built and owned by shark635csi on Instagram might just be the ultimate grand touring machine, for those that like that sort of thing.

While styling is subjective, most would agree that the BMW 635 CSi is pretty much perfect from a design standpoint as it is, capturing that classic Bimmer style in a way that makes it instantly recognizable among anyone – enthusiast or no. It was also plenty powerful for its time, thanks to its inline-six cylinder powerplant that cranked out as much as 280 horsepower, depending on spec and variant. Regardless, the owner of this particular example wanted more – much more.

They certainly achieved that goal with a heavily-modified S38 straight-six that’s been bored out and fitted with custom camshafts, new pistons, a ported head, larger throttle bodies, and the proverbial cherry on top – a 7675 Precision Gen II turbocharger. Those upgrades make a massive difference in this particular case, as this 635 CSi is now a certified ripper with 1,200 horsepower on tap – a staggering figure by any measure.

Even better, this big coupe sounds amazing, belting out the kinds of sounds we’d love to listen to over and over as we drive down long stretches of highway in total comfort. To us, this is the ultimate grand touring machine for that very reason – it’s well-equipped, luxurious, comfortable, and yet, it has enough power on tap to embarrass all sorts of sports cars along the journey – or simply enough to make us smile every time we smash the go pedal.
