Bargain V12 850i: Autobahn Burner Or Dumpster Fire Of Problems?

By -

In the early 1990’s, BMW brought us the ultimate grand touring machine: The 850. How does this complex machine hold up years later?

We can all agree the BMW 850 is a unique, sexy 1990’s car. Many of us have dreams of owning one, but are they as cool to drive as they look? The 850’s design has a timeless appeal to it, from the aggressive front grille to the pillarless windows. And the V12 under the hood is one complex motor.

Would you take a chance on a budget BMW 850i?

The M70 engine has two ECUs, one for each cylinder bank. To provide redundancy, it also has two fuel pumps, fuel rails, distributors, mass air flow sensors, crankshaft position sensors, coolant temperature sensors and throttle bodies. In some cases it even had two alternators, to power the in-car electronics, such as a telephone, fax machine, wine cooler, independent climate control and power sun shields. So, it has a bit of technology that can break after a couple decades.

Tyler from Hoovie’s Garage tracked down this dream car to find out if it can live up to his expectations. He bought his cherry example from the original owner with all records for $7,500 on AutoTrader. The car has had over $20,000 in maintenance. The 850 had him concerned about a few things, but after an inspection, the car seems to be in great condition.

His 850’s only downfall is that it’s an automatic. But Tyler already has plans to do a manual transmission swap. With a stick, the 850’s spirit may come to life in a whole new way. Here at 5Series.net, we love this classic Bimmer. What’s more, we’re thrilled to see the all-new 8 Series take its rightful place at the modern sports coupe table. Will the new 8 Series generate lust for the BMW brand like its predecessor? Let us know in the comments below.
