Audi's Twitter Mocks BMW Owners Stranded in Flood

An Audi Makes Its Way Through a California Flood, Leaving Two BMWs in Its Wake

Automotive brand loyalty is a funny thing. Ford vs. Chevy, Ferrari vs. Lamborghini, and of course, BMW vs. Audi. This competition manifests itself in commercials, forum arguments, and even playful stickers on car windows. Remember the ubiquitous “Calvin peeing on…” decals from the 1990s?

BMW and Audi are no strangers to friendly banter. They compete in the same market as one another. And it’s fair to say that if you were in the market for, say, a 3-Series, it’s very likely that you cross-shopped the A4, and test drove both.

In the spirit of competition, Audi’s social media team took a shot at BMW — and some of their owners. This past week on Twitter, they retweeted the ABC News video below about heavy rains and flooding in California. Three BMWs can be seen stranded and struggling in deep water. Yet they were easily overtaken by an older Audi A6.

The Audi drove through water that was almost up to the A-pillar! Though it’s unclear how long the car ran, or what other damage might have been caused by this little display of power. But for the purposes of this short video, Audi is the clear winner.

While it probably wasn’t the smartest move for the owner of that Audi A6 to plow through such deep water, someone at Audi was certainly paying attention. Three waterlogged late-model BMWs getting trounced by an older Audi certainly does not look good for us, but if those owners are lucky, they shut their cars off to avoid engine damage. Maybe BMW got the last laugh, after all.

What do you think of Audi’s tweet? Was it mean, stupid, funny, or clever?
