BMW 8 Series Coupe: Sleeping Titan

By -

BMW shot a cinematic video of the 8 Series Coupe on winding roads amongst rolling hills of Wales in the UK.

BMW seems to be enjoying it’s thinly veiled tease of the 8 Series Coupe since its announcement. Details and images have been released with remarkable regularity and they’ve even had journalists out to drive the pre-production models. In this video from the BMW Group YouTube channel, they give us the best preview of the 8 Series Coupe so far. The long winding roads of Wales are a superb proving ground, particularly for a GT car, and offer spectacular scenery for a driving video.

The 8 Series will replace the 6 Series in BMW’s lineup later in 2018. It’s a definite push upmarket, and the price will no doubt reflect that. However, it doesn’t come across as cynical. BMW seems to revel in building what could be their finest high-end luxury performance car yet.

Their new interpretation of the Series car that’s been out of production almost 20 years will have a range of body styles as well as a full-on M version. From what we’re given to understand, the M850i will likely get a naturally aspirated 4.4-liter V8 and at the base model end will be an inline-6. The pure M8 will use the stinkingly fast twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 from the M5 and as well as the ZF eight-speed to feed the AWD system.

The M8 GTE race car also will also compete in the 24-hour race at Le Mans after a seven years absence, which will also be the 8 Series proper debut. According to BMW chief executive Harald Krüger, the new 8 Series is “the next model in the expansion of our luxury-car offering and will raise the benchmark for coupes in the segment.” That sounds to us like Porsche and Mercedes are going to have to raise their game again.

His obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic and then trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop him from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
