Wheel Offset Question
Hello,
I have been looking on eBay and the e60 Forum for a set of BMW 124 style wheels. They are not available on the 2008 528Xi as an option, only the 535i and 535Xi but you need to order the Sports Package too. It's available on the 528Xi as an accessory. All the wheels I have found so far have 20 mm front offsets and 32 mm rear wheel offsets (the wheels on a 535i). I was told these will not fit onto a Xi 5 series and I need a 43 mm front, 55 mm rear offset.
What is offset and how is it measured? If I get a wheel with a 20 mm offset and the car needs a 43 mm offset can I just use a 23 mm spacer and end up with the right offset?

Offset is the distance of the mounting face from the center of the rim.
So, you can use 43mm offset rims on a car requiring 20 mm wheels with a 23mm spacer, but not the other way around.
Also, as your rims get wider, you'll need a different offset to keep them from sticking out too far. For example, if you went from 8" rims to 9" rims, you'll need about 13mm (0.5") more offset.

I used it for months while looking for various wheels for my xi.

Second, you can't go with the RWD wheels with spacers. That would be backwards and cause the wheels to stick out even further, beyond the wheel wells. It will look terrible!
You need to order the 124's that are made specific for the xi (ET43 and ET55, if you wish to go staggered). You can also source just about any 3 series wheel for our xi. The 3 series also has a high offset, thus making their wheels fit well for the E60 xi's. Any more questions, feel free to PM me. I spent over a year looking into various wheels, their measurements, what will work, what won't and so forth for the E60 xi. I'm pretty confident in saying that I know my stuff inside and out when it comes to wheels for our AWD E60's. Happy to help and congrats on the car!

You might also consider a set of type 135 rims. They look very nice on the E60, and are one of the best looking BMW rims of all time, IMHO.

Or go 19's, which I think look even better than any of the 18's on the E60. I went with the M3 CSL wheels, as my choice (replica's of course, but they're made by Velocity Motoring).

Confusing stuff this wheel selection for xi's! I have a 2008 535xi. Trying to get new wheels. Now understand the offset issues. What about staggered set up? I think I have to get a "square" set up - correct? I found a set of m3 oem 19" staggered wheels - will they work? Thanks for any help.
