I have stock 2008 ix 243 wheels @ 17x7.5 +43.
I have a friend who has 08 i 243 wheels @17.7.5 +20
I tried using the calculators on 1010tires and rimsntires.com
Seems like there is enough clearance given that people are running x8.5 +30.
Is my math correct?

I am thinking about moving up a rim size form the stock 17" rims to a a square setup of 18x8x35ET. I plan on putting on tires with the following specs 255/40/18. Whats your take on that and will there be any adverse effects. I know the manual says the next option for my vehicle is the staggered setup 245 front 275 rear but id prefer the square setup since I had a lot of rim and tire issues with my e46 due to the nature of the roads. Any advice will be appreciated.

By the way, why are you even considering that size? Factory spec for 18"x8" is 245/40. When they do the staggered set up, the rear is at least 8.5" wide, sometimes 9". A 9" wide wheel would be the size I'd use if trying 255/40.
For reference, even my 245/45 (which are not as wide as 255/40), barely match the 8" wheel. The best match I have is an 8.5" wheel with 245/45x18.
Either get a wider wheel like 9" for 255, or go with 245 on the 8".
Want an easy way to see most BMW wheels: Felgen-Katalog - BMW-Treff - der Treffpunkt für alle BMW-Fans und -Fahrer
use the little selection box to choose body style: "Baureihe:"
or use the other selectors to choose specific wheel sizes. Keep in mind that all the e90 wheels fit, some F30, F10, some F12 and of course, all the E60.
For summer I'm using the E90 M3 wheel, 2 "front" wheels 18"x8.5".
There are very few 18" x 9" with an offset that will work but you could do that if you are set on having the 255 tire. The front wheel would be very close to the edge of the fender though so if you were to lower the car, there could be a rubbing issue created.

Thanks appreciate that information.
I tried 255/40x18 on an 8" wide wheel and could feel how the tire was too wide for the wheel. In corners, or even slalom type twisting, the weight of the car really shifted too much on the tire sidewall. This is because the tire is wider than ideal for the rim width.

My e61 with my friend's Avant Garde m6 replica wheels. He had them lying around at his shop and wanted to see what it looked like. Suspension is stock.
Wheels are:
20x8.5 245/35r20
20x10.5 285/30r20
not sure of offset.
I was surprised how well they fit, given that they are a RWD application. They definitely stick out too much. needs about -10 offset reduction. Didn't rub at least.
Compared to his RWD e60

My Ride: 535i x-drive
I am looking to purchase the Style 128 wheels from an X3 for my 2010 E60 x-drive. I am currently running the stock 17" wheels on a square setup. I intend to retain the square setup when I upgrade. I assume that I should go with the 19x8.5 all the way around. The Style 128 wheel from the X3 comes with a ET46. What should be the proper spacers needed for front and back? I also assume from this thread that the proper tire size would be 245/40/19 if I do not intend to lower the car.

M5 front fenders and a roll in the rear would be the business!

M5 front fenders and a roll in the rear would def. be the business. But not all of us can be as baller as you how much extra clearance does the m5 fenders give in the front?
I'd love to see your e61 sometime, I'm in the Bay Area too.
On an unrelated note: It seems that the non xi Style 243s should fit on a xi. I don't know why BMW felt the need to sunken battleship the xi.

Just drove it around a few blocks, not being ultra careful, but not trying to hit speed bumps and such.

I am currently in the San Jose area and am always down for get togethers or to just talk cars. Cars & Coffee SF/Blackhawk and Performance Technic have get togethers at the beginning of the month, always good options. Let me know!
