Figured you guys like pictures.....

It was finally time to get new tires, so I used it as an excuse to also buy new rims. What I went with were 20" repop 220 style rims. The car is a 2004 545i with sport suspension. The tire sizes I went with are 245/35/20 front, and 275/30/20 rear.... Zero rubbing. The wheels came with a 35 offset, so I added 15mm spacers to the front. The rear doesn't 'require' spacers, but there is plenty of room and thinking about adding 5mm or maybe 10mm to bring them out just a bit more.


Anyhow.... Here she is. I think the wheelwell was filled nicely without a drop.

ouuu those are sexy, nice choice of rims. really compliments the car. You really do need spacers in the back maybe 10mm

I did pre purchase some 5mm spacers for the rear that just came in after the wheels were installed. I am going to put those on today and see what I'm looking at. I do believe your right in that 10s will be the ticket. Of course, that means another set of longer lug bolts.

Thanks for the compliment.... I'm happy with the way they turned out, and I think my tire shop was happy someone brought in a bunch of stuff to install that actually fit! Im also glad I didn't go down to a 30 front profile and a 25 rear. Heck.... There is enough room in the rear to have gone with 35s to match the front and likely a 285 width also! Maybe when I wear off the back I will go with 285/35/20 next time around.

Check out this calculator. Next set of tires you can get as close of a sidewall to the front as possible.

How wide are the rims? I can suggest a good width for you through a couple of sites. You dont want an oversized width on thin rims. Not good for handling and not good looking.

The front rims are 8.5" wide and the rear are 9.5" wide.

I actually had pretty bad premature wear on the inside rear of my old tires that I believe is from the extreme tilted angle of the rear alignment... Guessing the sport suspension setup creates this? I plan on having a shop reduce as much of this angle as possible and still be in spec. I would imagine this would further bring the top of the tire closer to the fender..... So maybe just a 5mm spacer, angle adjustment, and 285/30/20?

Good link... I used several offset calculators online to figure whats needed when I bought these wheels and tires, but I'm now thinking the fine tuning will come with trial/error and experience with these cars fitting wheels would go a long way.

I didn't plan on going nuts with a super aggressive setup and be really close to the fenders etc.... I like a 'safe' setup thats not overly extreme.

The front are good at 245 on 8.5" and so are 275 on 9.5". These tire sizes (245/30/20 - 275/25/20) have the least difference in diameter for your car. Running 285 in the back is standing on the cliff off stretching it just a bit too much. But if you do want to run 285s then you go with 285/25/30. The 275/30/20 is a whole inch larger then the front. Thats a difference of +3.5% I dont like going over or under 1.5%. Well its too late now, next time

Right... I know I went over, this was to fill the wheel-well a bit. In-fact, I believe bmw sets the speedo parameters a few mph higher for some season compared to the speed of actual travel, so the 2.7mph dif with this diameter tire should actually be more accurate. I have no intentions of dropping this car. I simply went from 245/40 to 245/35 front when correct matching diameter should have been 245/30. Same with the rear... correct diameter on a 20" would have been 275/25/20 from the factory 275/35/18..... I went 275/30. Overall diameter on both front and back was increased 1" equating to .5" well filling.

Just installed the 5mm spacers on the rear. I do believe 10mm would be just right, but I want to have the angle taken out some via an alignment and see where its at first.

Not bad, much better then no spacer for sure. Btw i didn't answer you about your question about the sport suspension. Sport suspensions have a strong tilted angle in the rear, I had strong inside wear on my old tires as well.
