My Ride: 2006 550i
Default New E60 owner in Denver

Hello everyone! I'm new here, but no stranger to auto-enthusiast web forums (for all their information, camaraderie, and highly-opinionated banter that goes along with it :thumbup

A few weeks ago I purchased a gem of a 2006 550i with just 60k on it. It has steptronic, active steering, sports suspension, dynamic drive, and nearly every comfort/convenience option.

A little bit about me: I have always been an enthusiast, owning sports cars, pickup trucks, economy cars--spanning three decades and three continents. But this is my first BMW, and after recently coming from a Honda Accord, the driving difference is out of this world! This is also the first V8 performance car I've owned since my '96 Camaro, and the engine feel is unmistakable and something I've definitely missed. Oh, and maintenance costs don't scare me, I once had the 'pleasure' of owning a 944 :yikes:

I'm looking forward to being part of this great community. My wife and I are expecting our first child very soon, and she told me to go and get a nice 'family car', like a Volvo. Well I put a veto on that. The 5-series is marketed as a 'family sedan', is it not?

Four doors for the family, 360 horses for dad

My Ride: 2007 BMW 530xi, 3.0L I6, 6-spd Automatic, 255 hp; 2011 Chevy Camaro 3.6L V6, Direct Injection, 6-spd Automatic, 312 hp

Hi, I'm in the Denver area too. Lots of that vintage E60 chassis 5-series in Douglas County, and around Cherry Creek area too.
My dark blue '07 530xi AWD has got you beat in the snow here in Colorado, yet you'd kill it at Bandimere, right?! My inline 6 non-turbo N52 is a bit short on horsepower ( only 255 hp ) compared to a 550i and just about any comparable Lexus etc. out there, a common complaint about my model. Thing thats great about that classic inline 6 is the lighter weight magnesium engine block with incredible smoothness.
Good comparison in many respects is the Pontiac G8 sedan, which is the Zeta platform from GM, which is what my other car rests on, a 2011 312 hp V6 Camaro zeta chassis vehicle, and also what many police departments in the Denver area are using these days in the form of the latest Caprice, all being rear wheel drive, and they do surprisingly well in the snow here.

Good to meet you Car_Almond. I didn't realize the E60 was 'vintage'. Its the newest car I've ever owned! I know the style is controversial, but I really like the looks compared to the E39 and the F10. I plan to keep this one for a long time.

I'm not afraid of snow, but this is my first RWD car in a long time. I put snow tires on every vehicle no matter what. I think that with proper tires and the built-in stability control on these cars, it will be completely capable. Well, at least I don't have to worry about it until next season. One bonus I really am going to enjoy in the hot months is the parked car ventilation!

I was actually very interested in buying a G8 GT. I am a GM small-block fanboy, and IMO there is no better sounding exhaust than the LS engine (the 550i leaves much to be desired). But the BMW and I both happened to be in the right place at the right time (for the right price) and everything fell into place. I don't regret my decision at all!
