How does the Head-Up Display (HUD) work?

My Ride: E60 525i
hi guys, need to check with you, my car doesn't come with the HUD. it is a 2004 model. was wondering from which year does this HUD was fitted? i've read in this forum that the cost to install the HUD unit is costly - rite?

HUD was offered in 2004 but I think it was around February 2004 production. If your car doesn't have it, it's probably cheaper to find a car that has one than try to retrofit it into your car...

Re-fit a HUD can be done , cost about 700-1000USD , an a lot of work
New dashboard is not nessesery , you can use the one you have , must just be altered. ( make hole for the HUD lens + HUD frame )
It will also work with your ordenaiery windshield ( you must have a wery good sight to see the difference , I changed first my windshield later to the right one ,due to a "crack" in the old windshield ), so long it is not a "klima comfort windshield" , you can't have this together with HUD according to BMW.
If any one will , I can upload some pitcure from the "project" , so you can see what you up against

Did you get everything back together and functioning yet? 
Did you end up keeping the "normal" windshield or did you get the HUD windshield? (With the normal windshield, the HUD image may be double...)

Yes I got it all "together" again
, but it toke me the most of 8 hours from start to finish , and after changing the ligt/rain sensor + coding the car for HUD ,it now works 100%First I drove with the "ordenary" windshield , but now I have the HUD windshield ( changed becurse of a crack in the windshield this sommer ) , but I will say , "yes" you can see the difference between a "not" HUD windshield and "a" HUD windshield , BUT you can easyly drive with a "not" HUD windshield after re-fitting a HUD , the difference is , as I see it very small , only something you notic if you look very carefull for it.
