why waste your time with an FM modulator and poor quality?? the AUX input is going to have better sound quality.......... no question about it....

I don't have poor quality. The sound is good and I would preferr to use the Monster Cable unit and save my money on the true Ipod integration than to spend my money on the Aux which I would ditch when the Ipod Integration become available.

How do I listen to my iPod, or other MP3 player, through my cars stereo system?

BMW offers an Auxilary Audio Input option which your dealer can install for you. Once this is installed you'll have a new screen in iDrive and be
able to plug in any mp3 player, cd player, etc.. and play it through the cars stereo system.

Lomag,
My sales rep says the cable for an iPod is not available yet. I have a 2005 530iA with NAV. Is this accurate?

Thanks FikseGTS. What about cable for direct sound from iPod thru stereo (other than use of FM modulator)?

I had both a plain old Aux input in my X3, and then replaced that with the iPod adaptor.

The way the iPod adaptor was set up for the 3-series was totally unacceptable to me -- no direct access to music other than via pre-made BMW-specific playlists and by scrolling one track at a time thru my 1000's of tracks. It was essentially impossible to listen to exactly what I wanted to listen to.

For my E60 I'll use the Monster FM transmitter until there is a solution that lets me access the iPod's database fully via iDrive.

First you need the Aux Input mod. Lots of threads here on installs on '04 and 05 model 5 and 6 series, including dealer list. Do a search. Sometimes takes two trips as instructions in bulletin were perhaps in error, but almost 100% worked after second visit. Most installs place the Aux Input jack in the glove box. However, that is not absolutely required. Again there are some threads here on alternate locations. Iceman for one had it placed else where (mine is in the glove box). Once installed you may connect any device by using a stereo mini jack (typically male on both ends). Should u select mono jack u will get sound from only one side of system. Cost varied from $200 - $400 for parts and labor, depending on dealer and any parts discounts.

I have tested using Ipod like device (Samsung MP3 player), cassette tape player, and an old Sony CD player. All worked equally well. Just make sure volume on unit used (assuming no separate line out jack) is all the up to more closely match audio level of your other sources.

This is NOT a total integration. You will simply select Aux Input and get the audio from your external source. All control remains with the actual unit u r using to input the audio.

Good luck

for now you can get a direct aux input into the stereo system.....

don't bother with FM modulators when a direct input is available.... no comparison..... would you rather have FM or near-CD quality sound from your mp3 player??

I just bought & returned the Monster but got the new Kingston FM modulator and I think it sounds a lot better.... It mutes (insted of static) the station and sounded clearer to me.... Just my 2 cents... Oh and I have the ipod photo and the color of the cord is white insted of the black w/the monster if that makes any differents... Now where do you guys place your ipod, I saw someone that put it in the ashtray but w/the monster/kingston addaptor in the back and needing to be plugged in would it still work. I haven't picked up my 05 E60 yet (still being preped I guess)
