I correct myself.
The lighter is between the two cupholders w smokers pack, NOT in the ashtray.

Similar but not the same.
In auto cars the lid is bigger/wider (holding two cupholders) and looks more sleek..
In manual cars the lid is smaller/narrower.

As ridiculous as it sounds, this is my biggest pet peeve with my E60 - I hate the cup holders. My lease is up in September on my 535x and I was hoping to do a Euro Delivery in July but I was told the cars won't be available for the US till October. I was actually thinking of buying (not leasing) a current model year to save some bucks but I'd rather wait, just get the new cup holders (who needs a new suspension, sheet metal, engine, etc, when I can get cup holders).

And what's with the split-fold armrest.

Who would want to half-open an armrest - lazy engineering !

Manual cars actually have two cup holders. One which is visible in the pictures next to the gear lever and one inside the armrest, so you will have to have at least half of the arm rest open. Not a good looking solution.

Regarding the smokers package. The only difference in the front for cars with automatic is that the little compartment to the right of the gear lever has an insert which is an ash tray. Without the smoker package this compartment is a little bigger on the inside.
