Default E60 -E61 Precat

My precat just gave out on my E61. I dont have time to order a DP unfortunately so im just trying to get something put in asap.

18307565330 is the OEM part number

As per RealOem the parts are the same.
RealOEM.com Part Cross-reference

The item i was going to get was the Magnaflow 49779
MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters - 49-STATE & CANADA Catalytic Converters For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

Magnaflow wont allow a return since its special order. They said its only fitted for the sedan 535XI and not the Wagon.

Someone give me peace of mind and tell me that fitment is the same for wagon/sedan.

Thanks

Oh crap, really? You think that's why you were getting codes earlier, and it wasn't your oxygen sensor that was going bad (I think that's what you said you replaced)?

Im going to hazard a guess and assume that since i ran the bad injectors for a month+ that i exacerbated the issue. I wonder if id had less issues had i repaired it immediately.

Bad injectors -> Bad O2 sensor -> Bad Cat

In 3 months -> $2500 in repairs....

Anyways the guys at Sterling BMW had an OEM in stock and are shipping it out overnight for me.

Well, the car's a keeper now that you've fixed everything, is the way I look at it! :-)

Wow... What do bad injectors do? Flood the DP's?

How much does a pair of OEM DP's run you? Those Magnaflows seemed to be $1000 when I googled them...

Having experience a failed open injector on my M5, the immediate result if you don't shut it down is dumping .5L (YMMV) of fuel into a 1200 degree F cat, resulting in self-decatting behavior (scroll down to 8th pic).

However, what error codes are you seeing and what symptoms?

What are you referring to by pre-cats, the pre-cat O2 sensor or the primary cats themselves?

I dont have the error codes on hand, but they were along the lines of no pressure, and more misfires on bank 1-3

From your photo was the entire cat blocked and you were punching a portion out? My mech said mine was almost "welded shut" internally.

The part im referring to is Precatalyst - primary cat # 18307565330
RealOEM.com BMW E61N 535xi Precatalyst

$740 USD for 1.

I wish i could have put in the AR Desgin DPs instead, but Ontario insurance will nail me for that one.

Do you think your cats and your injectors going has anything to do with something the previous owner did or didn't do? Or is it just plain bad luck?

In Ontario I didn't think they have an Aircare equivalent testing system, where they would pick up on DP's?

Everything in those pictures was done all by the car itself. The fuel that was in the cylinder made it to the cat and ignited, melting a hole through them.

I believe the E61 has a set of secondary cats as well. If that's the case, emissions at the tailpipe should be reasonably close to standard if you delete the primary cats (catless downpipes) and retain the secondaries. If you are worried about the post-cat O2 sensor and assocaited error codes/OBD readiness, you can have an O2 bung welded onto the the pipe after the secondary cats, relocated the post-cat O2 sensors there, then run an extension to them from the stock connector location. This was an old trick on the E46 M3 with Euro headers (catless) for US cars.

At any rate, finding the cause of the misfires is the first priority, the cats won't cause that.

Well if i dont declare the DP and the engine is noticeably louder, i can get denied claims if i get into an accident. Not worth the hassle..

As for being a keeper.. i think im looking to going back to Japanese lol
