Next time I have the car on the lift, will try that method. But there have been many in my research that experienced the ball joint pulling out of its housing, leaving the housing still stuck in the hub. They were using a slide hammer to pull the ball joint down, so I expect the method above might be "more" gentle vs the hammering and less likely to pull the ball joint apart. Will probably attempt it again in a week or so, will report back if I do.
