Default Crossbar question E61 vs X5

E61 BMW P/N 82710415052
X5 BMW P/N 82710415053

Can I use the X5 in my wagon? Reason I ask is because I am looking at Rola 59829 crossbars (much better looking then OEM) but that one is for X5.

I couldn't find any dimensions on BMW's numbers, can anyone help?

Thanks,

Better way to ask is:

Can I use the Rola crossbars in my wagon?

I've actually used eBay crossbars before on my old e46 touring and have been happy with them. Decided to go the same route again on the e61 and so far so good.

Hauled about 250lbs of lumber on top and 450 lbs of concrete in my trunk. Thank you SLS.

I like these as it's black and can be taken off easily. I usually keep them off until I need them. It takes me less than 5 min to install or remove them and they fit diagonally in my trunk when I'm not using them. It also clears the antenna and is relatively low profile(oval). Not bad for $45 shipped.

Thanks for the suggestion. I prefer the flush look versus extra rod hanging out to the sides. I've seen some others in ebay that cost about $80 and give the flushed look but I'm hesitant because I don't know how their internal components will hold against rust, I think Rola uses better components that the Chinese competition.

I agree and Rola is definitely better if you want to spend the extra dough.

I don't like the rods hanging out either and cut down my last set on my previous car some. However I found I needed the extra width to transport 4x8 sheets more effectively.

Rust isn't an issue with these as the bars themselves are aluminum and they can also be custom cut really easily with a cut off tool. They're not as strong as steel but like I said, I've been able to test them with over 200lbs without issues as long as the load is spread out.

I have a set of OEM X5 bars for my E61 that Oceans gave me. The front bar fit perfect and the rear was wider then the rails. I had to take it apart and cut it down to size. It's a bit of a task with the OEM bars because of they way they are assembled and the fancy expansion track.
I don't know what the bars you are trying to purchase look like but if they have a little more width adjustment the rear one may work as is. If not hopefully it is easier to cut to size then the OEM X5 bar.

Hope this helped rather then creating more confusion.

This is exactly what I wanted to confirm. I'm looking at a set sold by Rola specifically made for the X5. With your information I now can assume distance between rack bars is the same on the front and slightly smaller on rear, which will require some cutting...but that's fine.
Thank you

My concern is not the bar, as you said, they are aluminum, but the hardware might not be aluminum or stainless steel, in which case it might rust.

Thanks for sharing, I ended up getting the Rola and cutting it down, it worked out pretty well.
