I have a 2004 545i with the Sport Package. I am really interested in this mod. I thought I had the "sport" steering wheel. Can anyone confirm whether this is the sport steering wheel or not. If it is not, then I have to order a steering wheel, airbag etc.? What can be slavaged from this setup?

Nope, im afraid thats not the sports wheel. You have the SE no sport wheel, the same an my old wheel. You will need to get a sports wheel and airbag if you plan on changing.

Craggy,

Thank you for your quick reply. How is it I have the Sport Package but not the Sport steering wheel? Is that common? So to confirm, I will need the entire sport wheel setup or SMG Steering wheel including airbag and buttons etc?

Did you buy your car from new?
I bought my 545i second hand, it had a sports package retrofitted but the wheel was the original plain one, just like yours..
You will need to buy the full wheel and airbag , if you go with an SMG wheel you will also need the coil spring cartridge to add the extra necessary wires through the steering colom for the paddles.

Unfortunately nothing can be salvage. You'll need at least SMG steering wheel not just Sport steering wheel (std sport steering has no paddle shifter slot on the back), both left & right paddles, round airbag & mounting plate, both left & right multifunction buttons then the coil spring insert from my530i that has been modded (stock one wont work) to interface w/ std Steptronic auto. Check the parts price w/ Garry Romani of BMW Newport and PM my530i for pricing on his awesome mod.

Or you can jump on http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=50200 it includes the same mod by my530i but it's a full blown M5 steering wheel (has thumb notches, red/blue M stitches + logo & diff. paddles that has +/- signs and seems to be heated too), will match perfectly as the car is the same model & close on built year w/ you for a great price.

Another item at this stage that needs noting is if your "cold weather package" includes heated steering wheel ?

Maybe I'm wrong but first time I see sport seats (sport package) with standard steering wheel. Is the steering wheel a selectable option off the sport package?
