My Ride: 2008 535i, carbon black on black, sport automatic, M package (M-tech), Premium package, tech package, USB...
Thumbs up

I have never done 3M clear bra before. I think I know the advantage of doing it, but what about the disadvantages? My car is carbon black, so I am not worrying about it turning yellow. As for the stone chip on my current car, I am really thinking seriously about this 3M clear bra. Do it or not to do it. I like to hear your feedback, thanks in advanced...

Is there anyone who did it but regret about doing it??

3M Scotchgard Film

Cost is around US$300-1000 depending on installer and amount of surface area covered.

I actually went with Venture Shield rather than the 3M product due to the longer warranty. In either case, I think it's a good way to go. I did a poll a while back here or on the other site, only about 40% of us agree however, 60% don't want a clear bra. I haven't heard from anyone who have one that wishes they hadn't but they're probably out there.

It would be nice to have opinions from those that have done it. I am having my Carbon Black 550is done at the PDC prior to PU, and I am interested to see what experiences folks have had. Pictures always help. What kind of maintainence is required. I also understand that if you want to do headlights you need to do them yourself as in some states it's illegal to cover them..But all in all it seems like a good idea to me.. I had a 2002 carbon black M5 and it did show road rash on the hood, lights mirror and front grill area..so I'm hoping to avoid this..

I was thinking about getting a clear bra for my 535xi - but I asked a friend who is a used car wholesaler about whether they made a difference - and he said don't do it. It actually reduces the value of the car over the long haul. He said after 3-4 years there is a noticable color difference between areas of the car that had the bar and those that did not. If you leave the bra on - after 3-4 years it gets kind of frayed and looks lousy. If you take it off it looks even worse because of the color difference. You could have a new bra installed but it would have to be lined up perfectly with the color lines.

On top of all that - the car will still pick up dings here and there depite the bra (consider if I put a piece of the plastic material on your forehead and then shoot a pebble at 70 mph at it - would it leave a mark???)

How about feedback from folks that have had a clear bra on their cars for 3-4 years (not folks who just put one on). What is the long term experience?

Are the BMW ones just as bad? I was thinking of getting one since I do a lot of highway driving.

I couple of very reliable detailers have agreed on this. Long term there will be a noticible color difference (more pronounced in darker colors).
